Courteous Communications for Scouts

A Scout is Courteous--Scout Law # 5

Troop 267 has traditionally followed specific customs regarding the courtesies we use when addressing adults delivering the Scouting Program. Additionally, these courtesies help establish a relationship between Adult Leaders and Scouts supporting strict compliance with BSA Youth Protection Guidelines. We expect all Boy Scouts to follow the Scout Law and to be Courteous at all times. Therefore, we would like to remind all Scouts that there is a proper and courteous way to address the men and women who work in the Scouting Program.

Specifically, we expect all Scouts to use a formal means of address when speaking with any Adult Leader like Mr. Smith, any Committee Member like Mrs. Jones, any Board of Review Member like Mr. Smith, any Parents (or Guardians) like Mr. Smith, and any Medical Professionals like Dr. Smith.

Special Messages for everyone in the Troop 267 Family:

· Scouts:

o If you do not know the proper name of an adult man, (e.g., Mr. Smith), address him as “Sir.”

If you do not know the proper name of an adult woman (e.g., Mrs. Smith), address her as either Madam (pronounced “Ma’am”), or “Ms.” (pronounced “Mizz”).

· Adult Leaders and Parents/Guardians:

o Let’s lead by example, and reserve informal means of address for those times when we are among ourselves.

o Coaching, and perhaps a bit of practice at home with your Scout would be most appreciated.
